Slowly getting there with this falcon. When exercising you must watch a number of different things. This is to reduce the chance of landing by pushing too hard. But at the same time you must push the bird as far as you can. A bird is an athlete and the heart needs to be worked hard to increase heart rate as well as once landed increase the recovery speed. The lungs also need to be pushed to increase capacity. Additionally a high protein diet is required to help this as well as build muscle and improve the condition of the bird. This video shows tempest starting strongly but after a short period of time his wing beat speed is reduced, the tail goes from being tight to fanning out to give him a larger area. You also see his mouth opens and his head lifts to open up the airways as well as the exhaustion setting in. His recovery has improved with fitness. A short video of our early falcon training. It takes a while to get a large falcon fit as they are heavier and not as boyant as the smaller falcon’s. The idea of this method of training is to cast of at distance and fly into the lure and only do two or three passes. This will develop the falcons sprint to the lure, pitch, stoop then over the coming weeks increase the passes and in turn will strengthen the falcon and increase stamina and lung capacity… Once the falcon leaves the glove it must never be allowed to land until the lure is served.
